During a conference on quality, which was organised by CYS and the Cyprus Certification Company (CCC), a number of certificates of quality were handed out to Cypriot companies and honours given to the National Infrastructure of Greece, the general manager of Vassilikos cement works Giorgos Sideris and head of CYS, Ioannis Karis. Speaking at the conference, Finance Minister Harris Georgiades said that during unfamiliar and particularly difficult economic conditions, the example given by entrepreneurs who were investing in quality was very important. “CYS and CCC have to play their own important role in the overall effort to overcome the country’s economic crisis,” he said, adding that he supported both organisations whole-heartedly. “Their conscious transformation from civil organisations to autonomous, independent, private organisations helped with their modernisation and a sharp improvement of their functions,” he said.

Georgiades hailed the signing of the three memoranda, especially the one signed with the SII as it would now begin a new era in the life of Cypriot standards and certifications, helping to further strengthen relations with Israel. The minister congratulated both the businesses and businessmen that were awarded at the conference.

Director of CYS and CCC, Petros Markou, said that cooperating with their counterparts in Israel would open new horizons in the energy sector which could benefit both the economy and society. “We are especially satisfied this year as well because we feel we have laid the foundations towards quality,” he said. Markou mentioned the need to amend existing legislation to comply with the requirements of the new European standardisation regulations and said that necessary steps had been taken. He said that the CCC was a leader in the field of certification and they had recently signed an agreement with British Company IFC Certification, whose inspectors will hand out certifications regarding fire safety issues. Markou said that the CCC has also been approved as an authorised elevator inspector and had been accredited as a notified body to control the construction of playground equipment.

The aim of the agreement signed with OEV is to further develop relations between the two parties, a necessity during this difficult period for Cypriot businesses. The memorandum of cooperation with the European University of Cyprus will look to promote activities in areas of common interest and to exploit the experiences of both parties for mutual benefit.
