Commencement of the training programme on “Promoting women as sports executives”

In an effort to comply with European Union and Council of Europe policy to promote women in decision-making roles in sports, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has called for National Olympic Committees to establish training programmes for women in Sports Management

The Cyprus Olympic Committee (COC) has responded to the IOC’s call by implementing such a programme through its Women and Sports Commission. The initiative was made possible with the financial support provided by the IOC, specifically, via the European Woman in Sport award given to former Commissioner Mrs Androulla Vassiliou.

The programme “Promoting women as sports executives” is tailor-made and addressed only to female executives.  It covers a broad spectrum of Sports Management topics, with the contribution and participation of distinguished trainers, including sports experts and renowned athletes, both from Cyprus and abroad.

The aim of the program is to empower women to participate more effectively in the decision-making bodies of sports organizations through the following actions:

Presentations on the international and Cypriot reality, as well as historical data related to the topic "Women and Sports".
Educational workshops aimed at acquiring basic knowledge from those involved in management, organization and leadership.
On-site visits to sports organizations, which will include presentations of the strategy, organizational structure and operational model of these organizations.

EY Cyprus has taken on the implementation of the 26-hour training programme, with all training modules to be taught at its Jean Nouvel offices located at 6 Stasinou Avenue, 1060 Nicosia.

The first module took place on Tuesday, 29th May 2018, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and featured as guest speaker Mrs Claudia Bokel, the 2004 Athens Olympic Games fencing champion and former member of the IOC’s Executive Board.

To accommodate high levels of interest, the COC’s Women and Sports Commission revised its original quota, increasing the maximum number of participants from 50 to 60 women.

It should be noted that this programme is pioneering in the field of women’s sport as it is the first of its kind in Cyprus.
