The system was installed with consideration for ‘Accessible Nature and Culture-Sustainable Tourism-In-Heritage’, a project that seeks to improve accessibility to natural and cultural spaces for people with disabilities, according to the municipality.

The project has been approved for funding under the Interreg V-A Greece-Cyprus 2014-2020 cooperation programme with a total budget of €1.2 million. Co-participating in the project along with Ayia Napa municipality, are the municipalities of Sotira and Rethymno as well as the National Confederation of People with Disabilities.

A feature of the system includes audio guiding buoys informing users of the distance from the beach and depth of the water via a waterproof remote control and is expected to provide the opportunity to visually impaired individuals to enjoy the sea and swimming securely and independently.

“Despite the adverse conditions caused by the pandemic and the economic crisis due to the war between Russia and Ukraine, the municipality of Ayia Napa with vision, strength and persistency continues to implement pioneering projects,” the municipality said.
