Air traffic growth in Cyprus double the EU average

Air traffic to and from Cyprus increased by 14.3% from 2016 to 2017, nearly double the EU average of 7.3%, a Eurostat report published recently showed.

For the first time, the numbers surpassed 10 million in Cyprus, reaching 10,239,000. While 6,811,000 of those travelling to and from Cyprus travelled within the EU, another 3,428,000 flew to other destinations.

2017 was also the first year more than one billion travelled by air in the EU. The number was 1,043 billion, up 7.3% from 2016 and by 39% from 2009.

According to the report, over this period, air passenger transport has steadily risen in the EU. In 2017, intra-EU transport represented almost half of total air passenger transport in the EU and extra-EU transport over a third, while national transport accounted for fewer than 1 in every 5 passengers.

In 2017, the largest number of air passengers was recorded in the United Kingdom (265 million passengers), followed by Germany (212 million) and Spain (210 million). The number increased in all member states.
